Union Beat Policing

Beat policing is the permanent duty of a certain number or special policemen in a particular area. Our urban areas are divided into beats and each beat is entrusted to the police station located at that location. This idea comes from the workings of the London Metropolitan Police. The Japanese koban system also has a designated area under each koban or police box. Some police officers in these areas exercise discretionary power beyond the direct control of superior officers to police the area.
